Acquiring and sorting the photos
(see list under My Photos heading for galleries)

I started bird watching like most budding ornithologists by going to a location chosen by my school group leader (often Christchurch Harbour in Hampshire) and scanning around with my binoculars to identify as many species as possible.  That idea of acquiring a 'day list' of birds seen pervades the hobby of 'birding' which I personally find rather makes it into a sport, with too much racing around in cars - hardly eco-friendly.

Later in life when I was out walking with friends and family, the odds of my companions being serious bird watchers were virtually zero and I began to observe nature as a whole, something my mentor in bird watching had in fact always encouraged.   That meant looking at plants, insects, butterflies and just shapes and colour in the environment or even the bigger landscape.  I developed an enthusiasm for macro photography because of my interest in butterflies.

In Lithuania, I have had more time as a part time pensioner and more truly wild locations to visit.   The fact that there is less intensive farming means that there are many more species to see.  The gradual but now significant improvement in digital camera technology and image processing have also made the process both more technically interesting (and I am a bit of a tech nerd) and more successful.

My collection of photos is therefore broadly spread across nature and the landscape in which I enjoy it.  Organising the photos into categories for someone else to enjoy has been a challenge.  I hope the headings you will find under this tab will direct you to some images that you wanted to see.
